It is for sure interresting, but I have a question. How much is the story in the japanese version different?

It`s not very different, except for the names that have jokes or other meanings. The basic history is not affected. And the names of the techniques, a lot seems to have no translation.

One interesting thing about the Japanese version is the real name of the Chrysm, called "Goosuto", meaning "Ghost". The machines in the plant use Ghosts, the weapons of Momo use Ghosts (like the Flame Chrysm and the Ice Chrysm), etc.

Plus this, first changes between versions, the Faeries have a third option in the Casino (remember that in the US version there´s only Casino and the option to change names) and the gameshark techniques, named "Noting" in the US, in the J. version have names (and some have unused shouts).

The names of the McNeil ghosts are a particularly interesting change, considering that their names as relating to businesses would make -greater- sense to a US audience. That's a joke within the game that I would have never understood were it not for this thread.

Although 'Conger Mart' isn't a particularly intimidating boss name, it would be funny.

Very strange that most of the techniques have no real direct translation, but are REALLY close to something else. ex: Hasaato (speed) - is really close to haste. Maybe they're pulling the old FF routine of -Ra, and -aga. Fu seems to be group effect or something like "one step up".
Now that I think about it, Phantasy Star had some weird names too. ex: Megid.

Kongaamarito also looks a bit more like "Conglomerate". And it fits with "amalgam".

About the names of the techniques, certainly Japanese RPGs have the habit of weird naming conventions. There´re some of them that could have translation and the "evolutions" of those techs doesn´t have a meaning (like Ririfu, that can mean Relief, but the others means nothing, or Valhala).

And with Kongaamarito, i think of that at first, but "Conglomerate" in Japanese is コングロマリット, that is Konguromaritto, similar but the double "a" in Kongaa, it´s like saying "er" (if you search the exact Katakanas of "Kongaa" you find "Conger"). A translation based on that could be Congermerate, certainly sound better than Conger Mart and could be a joke fusing "Conger" and "Conglomerate", so the fusion of the McNeils have a fusion in the name too. I´ll change it now.

The Mirya Robots are named Pochi? Hutzil or Phobos should be called to honor Darkstalkers.

Myollnir and Valhalla, i believe BoF5 waited until the change of name of last Thunder Spell, why is not complicated to use the ultimate Nina2 spell "Bolt-X!!!".

War Trophy..? yeah... very cool that pilfer, i sound as Barbarian Diablo II Spell XDD...

Ryu Henshin... more Cool, but are ok Ascension...

I forget to mention about the Pochi in the robots. It´s a very interesting thing the difference between these robots and the Myria ones. It seems that "Pochi" is a common dog name in Japan, and the robots in Myria Station doesn´t have Pochi in their names. The difference between them is that the ones in the Tower are repaired by Momo, so we can think that for Momo the robots she has in the Tower are like pets.

Yeah... this thread is interesting lately.

I see your point about Conger Mart. But there's a few words in japanese (especially katakana) that don't match up exactly. Look at the McDonalds sign. It says "Hanbaga" It's not Hanburger, it's hamburger. They can be weird like that sometimes.

And Valhalla simply seemed to me like a norse god reference to Thor (the one most people know about).
And Kansai Dolphin -> Australian Dolphin worked pretty well I think.

About the first point, it says Hanbaagaa because they doesn´t have the same letters than us and so they must find the closest to the pronunciation of the word (pronunciation, not how it´s written in english). Then they have the N instead the M, because Hamubaagaa it´s not closest to the pronuncation of the word, examples for this are Fire (Faia), The (Za), Alone (Aaron). In this case, Conglomerate written in Katakana is Konguromaritto (the closest to the pronunciation since Guro it´s closest to Glo than Gaa, normally used with Ger), the "Konguro" part is "conglo", but "Kongaa" from Kongaamarito is "Conger". Plus, if you search in google the Katakanas for Konguromaritto (conglomerate), you´ll find 145.000 results, but if you search Kongaamarito (Amalgam), you only have 18 results, all form Bof3 sites.

About the Valhalla, i forgot to put a reference (i´ll change it right now), but it has no relation with Thor, except being from nordic mithologys. The Valhalla is the place where half of the people who die in combat goes, and it´s ruled by Odin. The relation with Rei could be that he has a lot of techniques about War, and the ones who die in war/combat goes to Valhalla. Myollnir (Mjolnir) is the reference to Thor´s Hammer.

Nina Wyndia: Yeah, in my second post in this trhead there`s the name writted in Katakana and Romaji, his real name is Babaderu (Babadel), like in Bof 2 they cut it to Baba.

Aspara Gus: Kimiko is the girl that explains how to make Shisu, Miyuki is her daughter (that appears only in the Adult part) and Ylikov is the cat in the same house. The names they have are from Japanese people who won a "contest" to choose a name to appear in the game (Sekine, the one with the Ashura sword, Toshihiro, the one with Midas Stone, Mayumi Nakamura, the one who choose the name of the Ivory Dice (In japanese, Rich Mard) are other winners)

Oh, and I just noticed something weird. On my copy of BoF3 (PSP English version) Hao Chi's name is spelled as Haochi. I haven't played the PS English version in a bit, but in most FAQs I see it as Hachio. Was the name changed between the PS and PSP versions or is this just some random weirdness?

It seems that was fixed in the PSP version, since in my version, and i think all of them, it says "Hachio". I´m surprised they fixed something like that. Have they fixed Cerebus (Cerberus) or Thanotos (Thanatos)? What a shame they didn´t add one of the 11 techniques they left away in the game...

I'm not sure about these two names, but I can check it for you. Do you know where to find those enemies? I can't remember off the top of my head. :sweatdrop

Cerebus is in the outside of the Angel Tower and Thanotos is in Ryu`s mind.

I checked the first one and they haven't corrected it – it’s still Cerebus. Unfortunately I'm past the part in the game where you get to fight the other enemy, but seeing as the other name wasn't changed I'm pretty sure this one isn't either.

Tyrfing...? Why a curse dark sword is holy in BoF3? if is curse sword, then Rei have problems, is best the american version beacuse have great holy damage

I guess it´s only because it was a magic Sword, in Bof 4 they named it "Cursed Tyrfing" and not only Tyrfing.

yeah... but also Tyrfing in Castlevania:Simphony of the Night is a curse sword that have 0 atk.
