Tales of Rune-Midgard: Dragon's Prophecy ~ Enter the Dragon

This is a story I'm writing in conjunction with Yorae Dragon. It's called Tales of Rune-Midgard. This is a fanfiction based on Ragnarok Online and takes place in the world of RO, Rune-Midgard. When Yorae was talking to me about his new story idea, I thought, "How about I write the human side?" We talked for a while and came up with this idea for a story we'll write separately, I write the human side and he writes what happens on the monsters' side. In the end, our stories and characters will intertwine for a final showdown.

    What do you guys think?

Because it would be too confusing if our posts overlapped each other and people would have to read back and forth. Also, communication is a bit of a problem, so we're just going to write it separately, but tie some events together for each other to deal with. We're going to make a final, joint-chapter in the end of the story, though.

    We're still talking about it.

What he said. We both have our own ideas, and we each want our characters to do different things, go different places, etc. So we're gonna only BARELY tie the stories together. If we both posted our stories in the same thread, well than it's not a fanfic/story, it's an RP. And we don't want an RP.

    Tales of Rune-Midgard
    Dragon's Prophecy

This is the tale of a knight who joined the ranks of the Dragonblade Dynasty after the passing of his father, Zorro, many years ago. He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and protect the land of Rune-Midgard. His name is Fox Cobalt, officer of a small platoon of soldiers in his guild, the Dragonblade Dynasty. The leader, Guildmaster Cecil, recognized his skill and leadership and made Fox an officer. Now the gallant knight commands a small group, which includes his two best companions, Icarus Vertigo and Lloyd Weaver. Icarus is a hunter who hails from Payon to the east, a village of renowned archers. Lloyd is a wizard who comes from Geffen to the west where mages hone their magical energies. Recently, however, there have been rumors spreading around about a strange going-on in Geffen...

    Chapter I: The First Mission

"Officer Cobalt!" the Guildmaster yelled, his voice echoing in the long, narrow halls. "Yes, Sir?" Fox said as he came to attention.

The young officer standing in front of the Guildmaster stood still, loyally awaiting his leader's next instructions. His hair was mid-length, kind of scruffy and spiky, and blue. He wore a light breastplate with a chained mesh around his neck. He also wore a matching lower armor, jointed at the elbows and knees. His long red cape flowed down and stopped right above the floor. Fox's sharp brown eyes stared ahead, waiting for his orders.

"Has your platoon reported back to you about the rumors in Geffen?" the Guildmaster asked as he held his hands behind his back. The Guildmaster was not a man to be trifled with. Fox and the Guildmaster were in the Guildmaster's private quarters, a place that no one would ever want to go alone. Heads of monsters lined the dark-colored walls. He always kept the fire down to a minimum, further adding to the dark feeling of the room.

"No, Sir! They are still investigating the vicinity of Geffen, Sir," Fox stated clearly. "Good. Why are you still here in Prontera, Cobalt? Aren't you supposed to be leading your troops?" the Guildmaster asked. "Sir, I had an important errand to run in town and I told my platoon to go ahead of me," Fox said. "What was this 'errand,' Cobalt?" Then, two men came running up to Fox. It was Icarus and Lloyd. "Sorry we're late, Sir," said Icarus. "What is our mission, Officer?" said Lloyd, saluting.

Icarus was a hunter, an experienced archer, and one of the best at that. He was tall, and had short, messy white hair, which was kind of spiky on the sides that hanged down. His leather vest was divided into two colors: brown up top and green down bottom. He wore it only half-zipped up, leaving the top half open. The same color scheme was used for his pants and gloves as well. The gloves were mostly brown, but turned green around the knuckles. The inside of the gloves was full of some kind of furry material. His pants were mostly brown, with some green at the bottom, but there was also some blue showing on them around his silver-buckled belt. On the belt, he had latched on his quiver of arrows so that they were slung on at an angle. On his right arm was a red scarf-like object, tied on tightly. Strapped to his back, Icarus' bow was resting gently on an angle. There wasn't any movement, no matter how small, that his blue eagle-eyes could miss.

Lloyd the wizard. There was hardly a single wizard in existence that didn't know that name. Standing at an average height, his long, sinewy dark-purple hair cascaded down his cape like a waterfall, falling to rest upon the dark brown muffler protecting his neck and shoulders. The muffler was adorned with golden designs, all bearing semblance to an eye. Underneath the muffler, his light brown cape flowed majestically, moving by the force of his own mana. The cape extended down just above the knees, where it became serrated. On each serration, there was a golden symbol, also resembling eyes. His red silk vest, with its golden-eyed choker, stretched tightly across his surprisingly strong-looking body. There were a few golden-colored strips of cloth running down the vest. Lloyd's brown pants, also adorned with golden eye-murals, were tight, but became loose and flowing near his feet, allowing for better movements. Finally, his brown leather boots and gloves were surprisingly soft. They were probably lined with Lunatic fur. His yellow eyes had a habit of flaring up along with his mana.

Fox looked back at Guildmaster Cecil with a nervous look on his face. "I had to retrieve these two. Their skills are invaluable to the platoon, Sir. I couldn't afford to leave them behind," he said. "Very well," the Guildmaster said. "But don't leave your platoon to be slaughtered without their leader to support them. Report to Geffen, Officer!" Fox saluted. "Yes, Sir!" The three warriors headed out of Creamhilt, their guild castle, and back to Prontera Square, which was located in the middle of town. It was decorated with a large fountain with had the statue of Odin hovering inside it.

Fox turned to his men. "Gentlemen, our mission is to investigate the rumors that have been spreading around Geffen. It seems there's been an influx of monster activity coming from Geffen Tower. You know what to do," he explained. "Yes, Sir!" Icarus and Lloyd said in unison. "Icarus, have you stocked up on arrows?" Fox asked. "Yes, Sir. One thousand arrows, ready to pierce through any monster's hide!" Icarus replied. "Very good. Lloyd, how is your mana?" he then asked. Lloyd held his hand open in front of him, electricity crackling at his fingertips. "I made sure to charge it to the brim this morning. Monsters shall be singed to ashes," Lloyd said. "Excellent. Alright, we depart for Geffen!" Fox ordered, and the three exited Prontera through the west gate.

The small group came upon the lush, green plains of Prontera Field. Fox, Icarus and Lloyd made their way west toward Geffen. Around them was teeming with wildlife, and was, luckily, passive to strangers. Porings were sucking apples into their gelatinous bodies, Lunatics were nestling their young and Creamies were happily teleporting around the field. It was another peaceful day in Rune-Midgard. After about an hour of walking, the party reached Geffen Field, the field just outside Geffen. Fox had a bad feeling in his stomach that his platoon wouldn't survive long without them.

    COMMENTARY

Here are some facts about the creatures of Rune-Midgard for people who haven't played Ragnarok Online.

This is a Poring. Porings are gelatinous creatures that are perfect targets for new players. They like to wander around the field, sucking stray items into their bodies which is quite bothersome. Killing a Poring will release these looted items.

This is a Lunatic. Contrary to its name, these rabbits are not crazy. I think the name roots from "Luna," like the moon, as their mini-boss counterpart is named Eclipse. Like Porings, Lunatics are also easy prey for new, low-level players. They have very minor healing spells and aren't much of a threat to anyone.

This is a Creamy. Unlike Porings and Lunatics, these are NOT recommended targets for low-level players. Pupas, which are stationary creatures, hatch into Creamies, so if you are ever attacking a Pupa and you see the "cast time" bar appear over it, RUN. That Creamy may lay waste upon you. A more annoying trait of Creamies is their Teleport ability. Their card, which bestows level 1 Teleport, is often hunted by players, as it is quite a useful skill and only Acolyte-type characters can learn it normally.

A special thanks goes out to Yorae Dragon for helping me enhance this chapter with elaborate (if not overdone) character descriptions. Thanks, buddy!

I made a few name changes in chapter one. Guildmaster Ryu's name is now "Cecil." I wanted to go with something a little more original. Also, Lloyd Weaver's name is back to Atticus Crowley, which I had originally planned. The reason I changed my mind about using Atticus was because having "Atticus" and "Icarus" in the same sentence sounded really odd to me. However, after sleeping on it, I decided to stick with my original name. Lloyd Weaver is actually an original name Yorae Dragon made, which I used with his permission.

EDIT: Atticus is now officially Lloyd. Sorry about the confusion, but I'd prefer it if two main characters didn't have similar-sounding names.

    Chapter II: Dark Omen
    Part One

Fox, Icarus and Lloyd entered Geffen, the town of magicians. Already realizing they were late, the three rushed to Geffen Tower as fast as they could. Geffen Tower was located in the very center of town. It stood several stories tall and at the top was where mages graduated and became wizards.

In the distance, Fox could see two of his comrades, a red-headed male thief and a blue-haired acolyte girl. "Alexandria! Tribal!" he yelled to them. No response. They looked unconscious. Fox rushed over to Alexandria first. He knelt down and held her up in his arms. "What happened?!" he asked. "Young boy...monster...shadow...Fox...?" she mumbled. "She looks bad. Take these two to the inn! I'm going to take a look around," Fox said to Lloyd and Icarus. The two saluted and carried Alexandria and Tribal to the nearest inn. Fox entered Geffen Tower alone.

He walked down the stairs past the entrance on the right. On the left were stairs going up, which led to the training area for wizards. The area was littered with his dead comrades. Fox could tell this wasn't a battle, it was a slaughter. The musky stench of blood filled the air. As Fox approached the final gate leading into Geffen Dungeon, he began to get chills. He wrapped his arms around himself and was beginning to get the shakes. Geffen Dungeon was dark, but it was decorated with lit torches. After taking a few steps into the dungeon, Fox's chills grew worse. The knight entered a wide open area. A strange, purple haze filled the area. On the ground was some kind of symbol carved into it. It was a pentagram, the sign of the Devil! There were chains laying inside it, as well as something...vile. A decrepit corpse was bound by these chains, it looked like it had been here for a long time. His chills still worsening, Fox knelt down and examined the corpse. He noticed a badge attached to the body. This was the Alchemist's Seal! What was an alchemist doing in a place like this? Was it involved in some kind of ritual?

Fox's body then felt like it was encased in ice. All of a sudden, a great fear overcame him. He began panicking, sweating, and hyperventilating. After shaking his head a few times, he ran back out of the tower and into daylight. Lloyd and Icarus returned to the tower entrance to find Fox in shambles. "What's wrong, Sir?" Icarus asked. "You don't look so good," said Lloyd. "It's...nothing. I was just...worried about my comrades..." Fox muttered. "Well, Alexandria and Tribal should recover, but..." Lloyd paused. "I think the rest of the platoon is dead." Fox nodded. "Yes. There wasn't any sign of survivors." He punched his fist in the ground angrily. "It's all my fault! I should've been there to help them!" he shouted. "No. Don't go beating yourself up. This is that monster's fault, not yours," Icarus said. "You're right. Gentlemen, we're dealing with a real threat here. Whatever this...shadow monster is, it must be stopped. Will you assist me in this search?" Fox said to his comrades. Lloyd and Icarus both saluted. "Yes, Sir!" they said in unison.

"Who are you, demon? And what is your motive? I'll find you, and avenge my comrades!"

Yorae did take Lloyd's name from Legend of Dragoon, yes. As for Fox and Icarus, these are mostly original.

    Chapter II: Dark Omen
    Part Two

After mourning the lost, Fox, Icarus and Lloyd were trying to decide on the next plan of action. Lloyd paced back and forth outside Geffen Tower, creating sparks with his hands. "I say we find this demon and burn it at the stake!" he said angrily. Icarus, being the calm and collected one, spoke up. "Calm down. If you lose control of fire, you'll only burn yourself," he said. "And besides, it's up to the officer what we should do next." Icarus and Lloyd turned to Fox, who looked like he was deep in thought. "Fox? Sir? What are your orders?" Icarus said. It took a moment to drag the knight out of his trance. "Huh? What?" he stammered. "We want to know how you're planning on killing this vile demon!" Lloyd interrupted. Icarus shook his head. "I think...I don't know. The shadow demon disappeared without a trace and I have my own orders to follow first," Fox said. "We should report back to Guildmaster Cecil before taking any unnecessary action." Lloyd sighed. "Yes, Sir..." he said unenthusiastically.

    "Did you say...Guildmaster Cecil...?"

Fox, Icarus and Lloyd all turned around to see a decrepit old man with a walking cane. He spoke lethargically and his voice was shaky. "Yes, sir," Fox said. "So...you're part of the Dragonblade...Dynasty...aren't you...?" the old man asked. The proud officer came to attention and firmly hit his chest with the side of his hand. "Yes, Sir!" he said proudly, then relaxed. "Oh! How fortunate...we are to have heroes like you...around... Could you find it in your courageous hearts to do us a favor...?" the old man said. "What is it?" Fox asked. "We've...heard rumors of Orcs gathering to the west in great numbers... They seem...to be plotting a rebellion...against humans... You must stop them...!" Fox looked shocked. "A rebellion?" He took a moment to think. "I'm sorry, sir, but we have to report back to Guildmaster Cecil before we can make any outside errands," he said. "Please...Geffen is the nearest human settlement...and the Orcs could attack at any minute...! Please..." Icarus walked up to Fox and put his hand on his shoulder. "This sounds urgent, Sir. I think the Guildmaster would understand if we took a little time on the side to settle some important issues," he said. Fox nodded in confirmation. "You're right. Come on, guys. Let's go see if we can't talk with these Orcs and settle our differences," he said. Fox and Icarus began walking towards the western gate, while the disgruntled Lloyd dragged behind. "I wanted to burn that demon alive...hmph. I guess it can wait," he said. After adjusting his robes, he hurried after the others.

After the three had left Geffen, the old man began twitching violently. He was making spastic noises and he began foaming at the mouth. The mysterious Dark Priest appeared behind him and pushed the air behind the old man, who immediately fell over, dead.

"The Pawns moving up the right, and the Knights up the left, and that leaves the middle for me...King to King."

    -------------------------

    COMMENTARY

This is Dark Priest. I don't know much about this monster.

Other notes: This was originally going to start off Chapter III, but I felt it would make a better ending than beginning.

On a final note, if you're curious who the "Pawns" are, go read Running Shadow.

The story is very well put together, i like the atmospther in the story it is pretty good, for the scene when they in Geffen there is a mixture of a Dark and Cold atmospther there and i like how you ended this part with a mysterous Dark Priest at the end.
